Great Lakes Turn To Focus On Teacher Appraisal Systems

November 4-5, 2009
Chicago area

The Consortium for Educational Change and Great Lakes TURN have combined efforts, through funding from The Joyce Foundation, to provide union locals with an exciting opportunity to work with and learn from other union leaders in the Great Lakes TURN region.   The purpose of this leadership development initiative is to:

  • Engage emerging & veteran union leaders and staff in a comprehensive leadership development initiative
  • Establish and support a virtual network of local union leaders to communicate and learn from one another
  • Plan and implement a comprehensive organizing initiative
  • Develop and implement a strategic planning process for union locals that incorporates the three frames of unionism

Great Lakes TURN will meet again on November 9-10, 2009 in Chicago area, focusing on the topic of Teacher Appraisal Systems.   Participants and invited guests will have the opportunity to examine: policies, programs and research that pertain to teacher effectiveness and then discuss and determine ways to positively address this issue.   This special session will feature Charlotte Danielson’s Framework for Teaching, Peer Assistance and Review Programs and The New Teacher’s Project’s report entitled The Widget Effect, which studies teacher evaluation and dismissal in four states and 12 diverse districts, including Great Lakes TURN locals in Illinois and Ohio.  In addition, a panel of program and policy specialists will join this session to explore, with GL TURN participants, ways to improve and enhance how we collectively prepare, support and evaluate teachers in our educational system.
